While I can understand Avatar 2 being greenlit & announced since the 1st did so well, it boggles my mind that they would greenlit 3 sequels to 1 movie. As outsider of the industry looking in, I would've suggested greenlighting Avatar 2 & holding off on 3 & 4 until 2 is released & seeing how well/poorly that movie performs.

well I heard the first one did really well, being one of the first huge blockbusters released in the 3D format if memory serves... Indeed it might be early to tell if it'll make it past Avatar 2, but we shall see. I want to say that they did something similar with the Hobbit prequels, that there were going to be two or three of those movies.

Avatar is the top grossing film of all time. Hollywood likes those odds, so they would have greenlit 10 movies if they could have.
