In regards to J.J. Abrams and how the Star Trek vs Star Wars production approaches differ are concerned, I believe Abrams did exactly what he was hired to do. Paramount was calling a total retelling of the tale and that's what Abrams gave them. For Star Trek completely breaking away from the old production team was the logical decision. Star Trek had lost it's deeper meaning after Roddenberry's passing when Rick Bergman turned it into an action figure of the week franchise. While there were still some legitimate contributors to Star Trek around I think it was the safer decision to give a wide pass to all those previously involved. Disney on the other hand is looking to tell the next chapter in the story of Star Wars. It made sense to bring in as much of the original production team as possible to make the new trilogy a seamless continuation of the original. Had Disney wanted to start over with Star Wars then I'm sure that Abrams would have done the same purge that he did with Trek. |
