I still think giving out the expansion makes a lot more sense to entice players then giving them something they may not be interested (a different game) or something that caused a bunch of issues last time (handing out a million beta codes) because don't they want as many people as possible to subscribe? Aren't sub numbers more important than copies of expansions sold?

Well, I still hope the big announcement is free-to-play, but if I had to put money on one of my out-there predictions, I would bet on a new blood pact for a free expansion.

What Shane said about FFXIV not really needing to compete with WoW makes a lot of sense. According to the numbers, WoW only lost 100,000 subs yet FFXIV gained 600,000 in the same period, so they are co-existing and doing their own things which I think it's great.

I just think it's funny that when The Old Republic sells close to 2 million copies, but retains under a million subs a few months later, the story is that they are failing and 6 months after launch they go free-to-play. Yet FFXIV doesn't even retain half of their 30 day trial players, yet it's a success.

Definitely a little spin going on like Rob said and I think Square Enix is being way more forgiving towards their home grown product than they were for outside developed Tomb Raider. I'm interested to see if they can hold those subs (something FFXI was good at) or will continue to drop like the Old Republic once more people finished the main story.

YES, It took 3 years, but Rob finally added me to his list of impersonations along with his Ghemit impersonation "I heard you, Rob Roberts" and his Farore "Listen up S---bags..."

It was surprisingly accurate and I am honored. ;)
