I highly doubt the expansion will have any major hiccups like D3. The pre-patch takes care of most of the technical issues and gives Blizzard and the players a month to sort out. The only hangups at the expansion launch will likely be related to the sheer number of people crowding the new content areas.
I don't remember any major crashes when Cata launched and that was a HUGE revamp of Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms. There were also no huge or long-lasting crashes or downtime with any major patch in Cata, or even in Wrath if I remember. I don't see where Grandpa's getting all this negative memory from... a few hours having to wait to play D3? *shrug*
