Horde House

Episode Ninety-Eight: Christopher Walkin'

The first LFR has opened up, and it elicits a strong reaction from some of our hosts. You might be in for a shock on tonight’s episode of Horde House. We mix up the show tonight, because we can, and another e-mailer reads our mind with the Facebook question of the week– what could this gamechanger in 5.4 be and how does it function with old content? We theorize some creative solutions with our live chatters at VOG.

Also, we talk about a charity effort that our hosts will be involved with over the coming weeks. Even if you don’t agree with all our viewpoints this week, please consider helping out this worthy cause.

I think 2 hours on the first night of availability is not even close to enough time to pass judgement on this new LFR. Sorry you guys didn't have fun, but I think so many factors come in to a successful raid, such as group makeup, gear, experience, etc, that one small sample like that isn't enough to warrant so many complaints and snap judgments. I still look forward to playing this new LFR at some point, though considering my pace, it will be a while.

I know when I'm having fun and when I'm not having fun, and the other night in LFR I was not having any fun at all. I'm pretty confident that since I was with people I like, and the LFR Asshat quotient was pretty low, it's the raids fault, and those ridiculous trash pulls.

I stand by what I said that after an incredibly wasted 2 hours in there, rather than spend another 2 hours to re-evaluate it or whatever right now, I'd rather just do.... something else, with so many other things to do in WoW like dailies or PvP and other video games to play. Which brings up my other point-- I've seen plenty of people make their decisions if they are going to play a game to completion or take it back/sell it after spending 2 hours with it. I gave it a fair shot.

If they announce they are making serious changes in the LFR, I'll give it another shot, but seeing as the boss encounters were still pretty plain/boring... boring "moar trash" and council fights and nothing like Eleagon or Tsulong, this still isn't likely to rank favorably in how I've felt about the LFR's this expansion. Maybe the other three wings will be better but it wouldn't change that a progression raid would still have to play thru this poor first part every time, thus I have no desire to progress.

Well, you hit the nail on the head right there. If they don't make any changes then it's probably not going to get any better. However, being an MMO, the only thing that stays the same is everything changes, so if these are serious game-breaking issues then they will be changed and tuned as they always are.
Snap judgements seem to be the theme of this expansion. Dailies are terrible, now they're good again. Scenarios are boring, now they are interesting. Challenge modes are too hard and not fun, now they seem appropriately challenging and rewarding. I guess I won't know until I run it myself, but I have my doubts that it's as bad as you guys claim.
Once again, sorry you had a bad night, but at least you are looking at other aspects of the game to have fun with after the new LFR let you down.
Also, I can't believe I'm agreeing with Grandpa! :P

Although I'll admit I've flipped my opinon on Scenarios dramatically, it was after they made some changes to loot drops and valor rewards-- and I still groan when it's Theramore. SOME Dailies I still refuse to touch (shado-pan) but the newer ones in 5.1 were actually really good for the most part, and 5.2 seems to be the same as well. Challenge modes are a fun diversion, but I wouldn't agree that they are appropriately rewarding at this time... you really only get good stuff for getting gold or silver on every. single. one. We haven't done them again since the first night we beat one because there's really not any motivation. Which brings me back to something i alluded to last night, WoW needs another kind of prize bucket besides pets and mounts. A housing or some type of other virtual trophy wall would be a great thing to incorporate to be able to give every challenge dungeon a reward at every level, no matter how minor.

I liked that trophy case idea a lot! It's like achievements on steroids, a way WoW could make the idea their own as opposed to just ripping off how xbox/steam/psn do it.
And I wasn't just picking on you guys. I've heard early criticisms and eventual backtracks from all over the WoW community. Just Google "LFR is too hard" for example, and you'll find a ton of complaints about the previous LFR's which is the point I was trying to make in chat last night. This always happens when a new LFR is released, even when it doesn't effect you guys, but this time you are the ones pissed about it.
Xtofer said it best, it's all subjective.

If you didn't like the trash in lfr good luck in normal :/ for example the bridge part the adds there stack there healing debuff by 10% per stack instead of 2% in lfr and they have 20 million hp.

That said i love that the trash is interesting, same with the fights but its just my opinion. When it comes down to it lfr is lfr. You get two mechanic fights in lfr cause the vast majority of lfr people are bad.

I dont do lfr to experience content i do lfr to fill holes in gear but like i said thats just my opinion and you guys have a right to your opinions and i accept that.

I wouldn't say snap judgments are the theme of the expansion. I'd say quick feedback that's taken seriously is. Dailies sucked so they made good ones in starting in 5.1. Scenarios sucked so they gave better incentives to run the bad ones and made new ones that were pretty decent. Challenge modes are the one place I'd say I was wrong about, mostly because they are almost like puzzles and I didn't realize that at first, but the rewards still aren't really there (unless you are a paladin because the transmog set is super nice).

In the end, it's about having fun while playing, and that new LFR was just the opposite of that 100%. There was nothing fun about it. There wasn't even that fresh new feeling that new raids have. It was just bad.

Besides all the great back-and-forth discussion of whether or not there is some overreacting going on about the new LFR, I did want to say that you guys put on a fantastic show last night and the fundraising work you are doing for the MS walk in honor of Xtofer is something you should really be applauded for.

Xtofer isn't the only person in my life with this disease. I recently found out that an old friend of mine was also diagnosed with MS two years ago. After I joined the Christopher Walkin' Facebook page for the event, she saw it and contacted me to let me know she's been participating in similar MS Walks in her area since discovering she had MS as well. Just another reminder that this is a very important cause that affects a lot of people and like I said, it's awesome what you guys are doing to help.

Good show this week guys.

Btw, Did you guys know that if anyone bought the Collector's Edition of Heart of the Swarm, They get access to a Baneling Pet for WoW.

I'm curious if anyone seen any Pet Battles with a Baneling around? Cause that would be interesting. They are known to, Well... Explode.
