I Love That Song-- OC vs. OC Remix: Super Mario World’s “Overworld theme” by Koji Kondo and 'Super Mario's Sleigh Ride' by The OneUps

Original Composition vs. OC Remix! Which song is the superior version?

I wonder if Santa and Mario are the same person? They wear red, are fat and like to go down pipes.

It’s been a while but welcome to another edition of I Love That Song. And it is time for another Original Composition vs. Overclocked Remix! And of course, here on VOG we’ve celebrated the holidays with some really good beats! So, will today’s song make you grin or will it make you glee? Keep reading to find out!

First off the OC, Super Mario World’s “Overworld theme” by the famous Koji Kondo!

"Overworld Theme" by Koji Kondo

Super Mario World’s soundtrack is quite fun and memorable, I can remember most of the songs in the game and be stuck with them for days and not get tired of them. They also help with the flow of the game, pretty much like most (if not every) Mario game in existence.

This song in particular reminds me a lot of the Super Mario Bros. Overworld theme a lot. They’re not similar at all but they have the same essence. They set you in the right mood to play the game and make the journey to the last castle to save the princess quite enjoyable.

Also, the soundtrack to Super Mario World is one of the main reasons it is my favorite 2D Mario game of them all. Like I said, the songs are really memorable and add quite the ambience to each level or situation. I truly think Koji Kondo really outdoes himself with each game he works in, every soundtrack to every Mario game gets better and better.

HEY! But this song isn’t Holiday themed at all!

I know, we’re getting to it.

And now the OCRemix, 'Super Mario's Sleigh Ride' by The OneUps!

"Super Mario's Sleigh Ride" by The OneUps

The Oneups (or formerly known as the Oneup Mushrooms) is a cover band that does a lot of rock and somewhat jazzy covers of old school videogames. And they have been doing this for over ten years now! They’re quite popular in the geek music scene and have played in many scenarios and conventions and have released a lot of albums over the years.

“Super Mario’s Sleigh Ride” is a holiday potpourri song that combines some of the songs from Super Mario World (like the “Overworld theme” and The “Bonus Stage” theme) with the famous festive songs “Sleigh Ride” and “Jingle Bells” (during the end of the song), so it is more like a mush-up cover (if there’s something like that). But it is really damn great! It is really great combination Super Mario World’s upbeat and catchy music with the melodic and also catchy spirit of “Sleigh Ride”. It feels classy, it feels festive and just makes you get in the holiday cheer.

I really have to give props to The Oneups on this because they managed to combine perfectly both songs. They don’t feel off and they make them seem like they belong together from the start.

So… is it better?

From a technical point of view, I really can’t compare the two to say if one is better than the other or not. They are practically two different songs, even if they share the same qualities. But what I can say is that The Oneups did not disappoint. Like I said, they really managed to combine two songs to make a really great one, there are not that many people that can really do that but they managed to do so quite nicely.

I look forward to hearing more of their stuff in the future and hopefully another mention here in “I Love That Song”. And if like me, you want to hear more of their stuff, head out to their website or their Bandcamp page.

So this is it for now on ILTS, hopefully the next update will not come until another holiday, so stayed tuned to VOG on future articles. And of course, if you have suggestions for us to mention here on ILTS, be sure to leave a comment (and get VOG Points!) or post in the requests thread!

Until next time, keep on havin’ fun ridin’ on a one Yoshi open sleigh!

I agree it's tough to compare, because like you said they are two different songs, but for me it's really no contest. The original Mario World theme is one of my favorites ever because not only is the song itself great but the sounds that Mario produces while advancing through the level work so well with the theme. Whether he's jumping on enemies, collecting power-ups or hitting the mid-level checkpoint, every sound effect blends perfectly with the music to the point where I hear a lot of those sound effects in my head even while listening to the track on it's own.

No doubt. It's really hard to surpass the original. But like I said in the article, The One Ups did a fantastic job with their version too. So props to them for standing up to the original and giving it a new twist to it.

When it comes to doing remixes of these tunes, you gotta make sure you have the soul of the original intact.

It is but at the same it's also very important to give it your own style and make it work. That's why this OC Remix for this is almost on par with the original.
