Reviews
Games, Movies, TV Shows, Comics, Toys, Tech Gadgets, you name it, we want to review it!
Black Sails is an interesting animal. On paper, it is something of a prequel to the book “Treasure Island”, but it takes full advantage of being a mature-audiences series on Starz. Considering that “Treasure Island” is supposedly a children’s book, that is a strange direction for the series to take.
"That game looks hard," I was told in a Steam message while I was reviewing this title. I hadn't realized Steam was showing what I was playing, but it was, and he watched the videos from the store page to make that determination. The thing that struck me at that moment is that I hadn't realized that I was playing a hard game. I was flying around like a badass, destroying my enemies, getting destroyed, and going right back to destroying my enemies.
LUFTRAUSERS is a difficult game, but it doesn't SEEM like it's difficult, and that's not something you find a lot these days.
The Typhon Pact concept has led to some strong material in the Star Trek novel continuity, and with recent events in the Ukraine refueling the memory of Cold War tensions, the setting seems ever more relevant. The Fall is a five-book saga that details a sixty-day period in this future history, a period when the act of a zealous few sets forth a chain of events that challenge the ideals of the Federation.
Why is Almost Human on the verge of cancellation, and why was the first season so tragically mediocre?
Two years ago, Tim Schafer and Double Fine introduced the mainstream gaming public to a radical new website called Kickstarter. Eschewing the publishers who felt there was no market for an old school Schafer-style point and click adventure game, "Double Fine Adventure" was born, asking for $400,000 to get off the ground. 87,142 backers donated $3,336,371 - including myself. Earlier tonight, I played the first half of that project, Broken Age - Act 1. Double Fine initially placed a (non-binding) embargo on reviews, but lifted it a few hours later. They are worried about plot spoilers - which I will keep OUT of this review.
Katniss has become an unwitting symbol for rebellion by the 12 districts against the Capitol. The seeds for this were sown back in The Hunger Games, and now the stakes have been ratcheted up to unbearable levels.
You have to be able to accept the strange in order to enjoy Thor: The Dark World, otherwise it wouldn't make much sense if viewed from outside the scope of a comic book universe. It is a movie that is largely set in the world of Asgard. Since it's not a familiar place like Earth is, it becomes difficult to latch onto the stakes being laid out with the war between the Dark Elves and heroes of Asgard. When it eventually gets back to Earth, things do get better, but then the film just ends as it was about to get going. So goes another chapter in "Phase Two" for Marvel Studios.
Shot mostly inside Disney theme parks without the company’s knowledge or permission, Escape from Tomorrow surprisingly found distribution after debuting to some positive buzz at the Sundance Film Festival. Legally, Disney decided a better approach than litigation would be to not acknowledge the film’s existence at all. So it was released unchallenged via video-on-demand services as well as in limited theaters across the country on October 11th. But is the film good enough to overshadow the amazing story of how it was made?
When a routine repair mission on the Hubble Telescope goes wrong, the movie morphs from a showcase of the beauty of outer space to a thrilling, exhausting, horrific story about survival at all costs. It takes you by the force of its grip and doesn't let go until 90 minutes later.
I was hoping that “The Burning Man”, focused on Olivia Dunham, would be set during her years in Jacksonville, when her cortexiphan-based abilities were emerging. If this had been paralleled with a subplot involving Walter and William as they explored the nature of cortexiphan, it would have been a clever way to flesh out a key point of the mythology while also digging into what was only hinted at in the main narrative. Sadly, this novel is nothing of the sort.
