The Bobby Blackwolf Show

392 - 07/21/13 Bobby Blackwolf Show - EarthBound Virtual Console, NCAA vs. EA Sports

  • EarthBound has been released on the Wii U Virtual Console! We look at what has changed from the original, as well as speculating why it costs $2 more than other SNES games. (The article mentioned in the show about legal issues is here.)
  • The NCAA has decided to not renew its licensing agreement with EA Sports for the NCAA Football series, but this does NOT mean that the game series is in trouble.
  • Then we take calls about Steam sales and the upcoming game release season.

I've never believed the whole music issue and in April of this year Bill Trinen said he wasn't aware of any music issues. Even the Earthbound Central article itself is tagged as "rumors" so despite how well written it is, it was all just rumors and speculation from rabid fans who wanted their game and were creating excuses.

I think it just comes down to Nintendo not believing in it. It didn't sell well in the first place, which is the true reason it's $2 more. It's a premium for the hardcore fans to make up for the people that won't buy it this time either.

It's still a great deal, and I would totally buy it if I had a Wii U, but an 18-19 year old game is not a system seller for me.

These were the very specific legal issues that were unresolved: http://earthboundcentral.com/2012/07/earthbounds-specific-legal-issues/ - only one of them was a showstopper.

I've already passed that part of the game on the VC and don't remember if the Sky Runner song was changed, and there's no Let's Play video that far in the game on the Wii U version.

Until I see any specific quotes from Nintendo, I just can't believe these stories. That article is also tagged as rumor and they only cite their unnamed source. Rumors and sources, now where have I heard that before?

You won't ever get an official specific quote from Nintendo, because their lawyers won't allow them to admit anything in public.

I think it's great that Rob and I both have this deep, enduring crush on JLaw....LOL. Of course, I can safely say that my list of reasons includes some of those things Rob said don't quite apply to him...;)
